Open Source WINS in New EU cyber law

Good Morning! Open source software gains exemptions in the European Cyber Resilience Act. Red Hat's new Developer Hub consolidates tools to simplify workflows. To comply with EU regulations, Apple will soon allow sideloading of iPhone apps in Europe.

Open Source Wins in New EU cyber law

The European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) has undergone significant revisions, bringing relief to the open-source community. Initially, the Python Software Foundation (PSF) expressed concerns about potential repercussions for CPython and PyPI if the original form of the CRA were enacted. The main worry was that the PSF and the Python community might assume legal responsibility for security issues in products built using their freely provided code components.

The PSF called for language exempting public software repositories, such as PyPI, from legal responsibilities. The final text of the CRA, solidified on December 1st, introduces the concept of an "open source steward." This term refers to any legal entity dedicated to providing sustained support for the development of specific products with qualifying free and open-source software elements.

The revised text demonstrates a clearer understanding of how open-source software operates and its value within the broader software development ecosystem. It explicitly states that the provision of free and open-source software products without monetization is not considered a commercial activity.

Red Hat's Developer Hub Streamlines Development Processes

Red Hat, a leading provider of open-source solutions, has announced the general availability of its Developer Hub, a platform designed to streamline the development process by consolidating various aspects into a single platform.

Based on the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) project Backstage, the Developer Hub aims to enhance developer productivity and efficiency. It addresses common challenges faced by DevOps teams, such as complexity, lack of standardization, and cognitive load.

One of the standout features of the Developer Hub is a self-service portal that provides developers with a comprehensive range of information in one location. This includes access to different consoles, a software catalog, and up-to-date documentation. This feature not only benefits existing employees but also simplifies the onboarding process for new hires by making resources easier to find.

In addition, the Developer Hub offers several software templates, which can expedite the setup of boilerplate code needed to start building software. This feature can significantly reduce the time and effort required to initiate new projects.

Apple Set to Enable Sideloading in Europe Amidst Regulatory Changes

In response to the European Union's new Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is reportedly preparing to enable sideloading of apps on iPhones and iPads in Europe within the coming weeks. This move is a significant shift for Apple, which has traditionally maintained strict control over its app ecosystem to ensure security and quality.

The DMA aims to limit the power of large tech companies, referred to as "gatekeepers," and promote competition in the digital market. In compliance with this act, Apple plans to split its iOS App Store into two versions: one for EU member states and another for the rest of the world. This split would allow Apple to adopt a more open approach in Europe while preserving its customary restrictions on sideloading in other markets.

Apple's decision to enable sideloading comes amidst mounting regulatory pressure from European lawmakers. The DMA could impose penalties of up to 10 percent of annual revenue for non-compliance. However, this sideloading capability would only apply to European iOS users, while iPhones and iPads sold elsewhere would retain Apple's strict control over apps.

Despite Apple's previous opposition to sideloading due to potential security risks, cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier has argued that Apple's concerns are "unfounded" and that legislation like the DMA does not put user privacy and security at risk.
