Node.js 21 is the latest release of the open-source cross-platform JavaScript runtime. It was released on October 17, 2023, and replaces Node.js 20 as the current release line.
Node.js 20 is being promoted to long-term support (LTS). Node.js 21 is great for early feature testing for your own specific environment, while Node.js 20 LTS is for production deployments.
Node.js 21 will be the current release for the next 6 months, until April 2024. The highlights of Node.js 21 include updates of the V8 JavaScript engine to 11.8, stable WebStreams, a new experimental flag to flip module defaults (–experimental-default-type), a built-in WebSocket client, many updates to the test runner, and more.
The stable fetch and WebStreams modules offer enhanced reliability and performance. The WebSocket client is experimental and enables real-time, two-way interactive communication between client and server. The test runner has a new --test-concurrency flag that allows the user to set the maximum number of test files that the test runner will execute concurrently. The V8 engine update brings forth a host of enhancements, including improved performance and the introduction of new language features.
Node.js 21 is available for download from nodejs.org.

Netlify Launches Composable Web Platform for Modern Web Development
Image: Agility CMS
Netlify, a cloud-based platform for web development, has introduced a new platform known as the Netlify Composable Web Platform. This platform empowers developers to construct contemporary and modular web architectures by seamlessly connecting content, data sources, code, and infrastructure. The platform comprises three key components: Netlify Connect, Netlify Core, and Netlify Create.
Netlify Connect serves as the data unification layer, while Netlify Core provides a unified development workflow. Additionally, Netlify Create offers a visual editor for creating, editing, and publishing content. The platform offers numerous advantages, including simplified orchestration for composable architectures, accelerated time-to-market, faster loading times for web content, heightened developer productivity, the freedom to develop a wide array of web applications, and a foundation that is designed to remain adaptable for the future.
Designed primarily for enterprises, the platform is supported by the Netlify Partner Ecosystem, Enterprise services, and Enterprise-grade security measures. With the Netlify Composable Web Platform, enterprises can tailor customer experiences and deploy fast, scalable, and secure websites, e-commerce stores, and web applications with ease and without the need for complex configuration.

Llemma: An Open Language Model for Mathematics
Image: EluetherAI
Llemma is a large language model for mathematics that was recently released by EleutherAI. It was initialized with Code Llama weights and then trained on the Proof-Pile II, a 55 billion token dataset of mathematical and scientific documents. Llemma is capable of tool use and formal theorem proving without any further fine-tuning. It is also capable of solving problems using computational tools such as calculators, computer algebra systems, and formal theorem provers. Llemma outperforms all known open base models on the MATH benchmark. It is available in two sizes: 7 billion and 34 billion parameters.
Llemma is open-source, and its models, data, and code are open-access. EleutherAI hopes that Llemma will accelerate progress on emerging research areas such as reward modeling, algorithmic reasoning, and formal mathematics.
Llemma is a significant development in the field of mathematics and artificial intelligence. Its capabilities have the potential to revolutionize the way we approach mathematical problems and research.

Google Bolsters Android Security with Real-Time Code-Level Scanning for Sideloaded Apps
Image: Google Play
Google has introduced a new feature within its Play Protect, known as "real-time scanning at the code-level," to address the proliferation of malware through sideloaded apps. This innovative feature scans sideloaded apps for potentially malicious code and provides users with warnings before the app installation is completed. Initially launched in India, this feature is set to expand to all regions in the coming months. The primary aim of this new feature is to enhance user protection against malicious polymorphic apps that employ various techniques, including artificial intelligence, to modify themselves and evade detection. By scrutinizing sideloaded apps, Google aims to mitigate the influx of malware that can ultimately find its way onto the Play Store and be downloaded by millions of users.

Dev Startup Day 2 - Start of the Dev Platform Project w/ Boilerplate
In this Dev Startup Day 2 update, Forrest discusses setting up the Dev Platform project with boilerplate code. He explores options like GitHub co-pilot, chat integration, and different boilerplate choices for Next.js. He decides to use GitHub co-pilot and a Next.js boilerplate with Superbase for the database. He also encounters some challenges with setting up the project but ultimately get it working.
Forrest explores GitHub co-pilot and decides to use it for the project.
He chooses a Next.js boilerplate with Superbase for the database integration.
After that he encounters some issues with setting up the project but resolves them by following the documentation.
He then explains his decision-making process and the considerations for using certain technologies.
Forrest plans to implement AI integration and payment gateway functionality in the future.
