Introducing Sudo for Windows!

Microsoft has introduced "Sudo for Windows" in Windows 11 Insider builds, enabling users to easily escalate privileges from the command line without opening a separate elevated prompt. Sudo aims to provide an ergonomic way to run admin commands inline, similar to the sudo experience on Linux platforms.

How Sudo Works:

  • Can be configured to run commands in 3 modes: in a new window, with input disabled, or inline

  • Inline mode connects unelevated and elevated processes, allowing interactivity

Microsoft warns that medium-integrity processes can potentially drive elevated ones when Sudo runs inline. The security implications of this need further examination.

Availability and Support

  • Rolls out in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26052

  • Will be open-sourced by Microsoft

  • For more features, Microsoft recommends the third-party gsudo
