ChatGPT Turns 1 Year
Good Morning! ChatGPT celebrates its 1 year anniversary this week as OpenAI deals with leadership turmoil stemming from an attempted board coup against CEO Sam Altman, who has since returned; these AI advancements provide a festive backdrop for the annual Advent of Code programming puzzle event which kicked off today.
ChatGPT Turns 1 Year
November 30th, 2023 marks the one-year anniversary of ChatGPT's launch. Within days, this AI chatbot from OpenAI went viral and quickly amassed millions of users. Its convenient chat-based interface made it uniquely engaging. Today, over 100 million people interact with ChatGPT weekly.
ChatGPT's meteoric rise reveals how good design drives user adoption and highlights AI's potential, but also its perils. Its natural language abilities make ChatGPT well-suited for generating false information. This has raised concerns about its implications for misinformation, fraud, IP issues, and discrimination.
Nonetheless, ChatGPT has sparked an AI gold rush. Venture funding is booming and businesses across sectors are betting on AI. Some even predict generative AI will have an impact akin to the iPhone's. However, 2023 may be the peak, as technical and infrastructure limitations like computing power could soon curb rapid AI progress.
ChatGPT's second year may see its hype give way to practical integration. As norms around using it wisely form, ChatGPT will likely become a regular part of workflows, helping workers accomplish certain tasks faster. However, vigilance around digital content authenticity remains essential, as generative AI could fuel election interference via personalized persuasion and misinformation campaigns.

'Hurt and angry': Sam Altman opens up about OpenAI board's failed coup
OpenAI experienced major leadership turmoil last week when the board abruptly fired CEO Sam Altman. However, just days later, the board asked Altman to return as CEO, which he has now officially done.
The reasons behind Altman's sudden firing remain unclear. In an interview, Altman declined to explain what happened, saying "I don't feel ready to go talk about that yet." He said the board plans to conduct an independent investigation into the events. Prior to firing Altman, the board had said it lost trust in his leadership, but the specifics are still unknown.
Altman admitted he initially felt "defiant" and "hurt" when the board reached back out to reinstate him days later. But he soon realized he wanted to continue OpenAI's mission of developing artificial general intelligence safely. Employees rallied around Altman during his absence and welcomed his return.
The implications of this boardroom drama for OpenAI going forward are uncertain. Altman vaguely stated that "clearly our governance structure had a problem" and the board needs time to rethink OpenAI's leadership structure. One immediate change is that Microsoft, OpenAI's biggest investor, will take a non-voting board seat.
Meanwhile, OpenAI continues rapidly advancing its AI capabilities. The company recently achieved a breakthrough in training a general purpose model called Q, which is seen as progress toward advanced AI. Altman reiterated that while AI progress can hit walls, OpenAI expects to keep significantly pushing boundaries.

Advent of Code 2023
The festive season is upon us, and with it comes the annual Advent of Code 2023, a unique event that combines the joy of the holiday season with the thrill of solving programming puzzles.
Advent of Code, created by Eric Wastl, is an Advent calendar of small programming puzzles designed for a variety of skill sets and levels. The event runs from December 1st to December 25th, with one challenge released each day. The challenges start out easy and increase in difficulty each day, providing a fun and engaging way for participants to test their coding skills and learn new techniques.
This year, Advent of Code has introduced a new policy: participants are asked not to use AI to get on the global leaderboard. This decision has sparked discussions in the coding community, with some seeing it as an opportunity to focus on the fun of problem-solving without the aid of AI .
Participants can use any programming language they prefer to solve the puzzles, making the event accessible to a wide range of coders. Communities around different programming languages, such as Swift, Alteryx, ABAP, and Rust, are gearing up for the event, sharing tips, and setting up leaderboards.
The first puzzle of Advent of Code 2023, released on December 1st(today), involved finding a specific calibration value in lines of text, demonstrating the creative and engaging nature of the challenges.
