Context: As AI continues to revolutionize the tech industry, software development is no exception. We're seeing rapid advancements in AI-powered coding assistants and automated code generation tools. I know it’s a question we keep coming back to. But what does this mean for us developers?

Garman predicts that within the next two years, most developers might not be coding anymore. Wait, what? Before you panic, here's the scoop:

  • The role of developers is evolving, not disappearing.

  • Focus is shifting from writing code to innovation and understanding user needs.

  • AI will handle the "undifferentiated heavy lifting" of coding.

Garman's Take: "Coding is just kind of like the language that we talk to computers," Garman explained. "The skill in and of itself is like, how do I innovate? How do I go build something that's interesting for my end users to use?"

However I found this comment in a reddit thread related to this news very interesting and important: “Always pay attention to who it is saying this stuff. NVIDIA, Amazon, Microsoft, all vested interests. They aren't getting rid of their own developers, they need those people to build new AI products -- but they'll tell you to get rid of yours in a completely transparent attempt to cripple your technical capability and make you entirely reliant on their products (which of course happen to run in their cloud infrastructure, managed by... their engineers.)“

GitHub's AI Survey Reveals Global Developer Trends

GitHub expanded their annual developer survey this year, polling 2,000 devs across the US, Brazil, Germany, and India. The goal? To understand how teams are embracing AI in their workflows.

Key Findings:

  1. Code quality boost: US (90%) and Indian (81%) devs are convinced AI improves code quality. Brazilian and German devs are more skeptical.

  2. Test case generation: 98% of respondents have experimented with AI for generating test cases. Talk about a time-saver!

  3. Security and efficiency: Nearly all devs (99-100%) believe AI will enhance code security and development speed.

  4. Career impact: 99-100% think AI skills make them more attractive job candidates. Time to level up those AI chops!

The takeaway? AI is transforming our field, but adoption rates and perceptions vary globally. As we integrate these tools into our workflows, it's crucial to balance innovation with security and organizational alignment.

UK Competition Watchdog Shifts Gears on App Store Probes

The CMA has been eyeing Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store for a while now, concerned about their iron grip on in-app payment systems. They've been particularly worried about how this might be squeezing developers and inflating prices for users.

Tech Tidbits: Google tried to smooth things over with "Developer-only Billing" and "User Choice Billing" options, but devs weren't buying it. They told the CMA these alternatives still left them tethered to Google's payment infrastructure.

The CMA's exec director for digital markets, Will Hayter, says they're aiming for a "fair and competitive app ecosystem." Translation: they want to give UK devs more breathing room and hopefully spark some innovation.

Bottom Line: While Apple and Google might be breathing a sigh of relief for now, it looks like the CMA is just reloading. Keep an eye out for how this "strategic market status" designation plays out – it could shake up the app economy in a big way.
