Arm's Open-Source Upscaler Brings PC-Quality Graphics to Smartphones

Good Morning! Arm unveils ASR, an open-source upscaler bringing PC-quality graphics to smartphones; Thunderbird releases version 128 "Nebula" with significant improvements for advanced email users; and a developer creates PySkyWiFi, a clever (if impractical) tool demonstrating potential vulnerabilities in airline Wi-Fi systems.

Arm's Open-Source Upscaler Brings PC-Quality Graphics to Smartphones

Arm has created a new tool called Accuracy Super Resolution (ASR) to make mobile games look better and use less power. Here's what you need to know:

Tests showed impressive results:

  • On a phone with an Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU, games ran 53% faster

  • Using a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chip, ASR used much less power than running games at full resolution

Arm is making ASR open-source, which means anyone can use and improve it for free. This is a big step for mobile gaming, giving developers a powerful tool to make their games run better and use less power while still looking great.

As mobile games keep getting more advanced, tools like ASR will be really important for creating amazing gaming experiences on phones and tablets.

Thunderbird 'Nebula' 128 for Advanced Email Users

Thunderbird 128 "Nebula" is the newest version of the popular email program, bringing big improvements for users. Here are the main updates:

  • New Technology: Thunderbird now uses Rust, a modern programming language. This makes the program faster and better, and helps prepare for future mobile versions.

  • Better Email Viewing: The Cards View, which shows your emails, has been improved. It looks nicer and works better, making it easier to read through your messages.

Folder Management: The area where you see your email folders is now faster and can do more. You can search through folders more quickly and work with multiple folders at once.

Other Improvements:

  • You can now choose colors for your email accounts

  • Menus are simpler to use

  • Windows users get better notifications

Coming Soon: Thunderbird is working on adding Exchange support and Mozilla Sync. These aren't ready yet but will be added in future updates. You can try an early version of Exchange support by following instructions on the Thunderbird website.

Note: The program won't update automatically right away. This is to make sure everything works well before it's sent to everyone.

“PySkyWiFi: completely free, unbelievably stupid wi-fi on long-haul flights”

By Robert Heaton

Software developer Robert Heaton has created PySkyWiFi, a test tool that uses airline loyalty program websites to get free in-flight internet. The system uses a program on the user's laptop and another on a computer with internet to send web requests through airline account information fields.

PySkyWiFi uses a simpler version of how the internet works, breaking messages into smaller parts and using a system to keep them in order and confirm receipt. Another part of the program handles sending data through airline account fields, using a special code to make sure it works.

Main features include:

  • Two-way talking through airline account fields

  • Custom-made systems for organizing and sending data

  • Possibility to use multiple fields to send more data faster

While not practical for real use, PySkyWiFi shows clever problem-solving and points out possible security weak spots in airline systems.
