Apple's $1B AI Investment

Apple has committed to investing $1 billion annually in generative artificial intelligence (AI) after being caught off guard by the sudden rise of generative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT. The company plans to bring generative AI technology across all its products, led by Apple senior vice presidents John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi and we’ve already talked about this in a previous Dev Notes video. Apple has already built a large language model framework called Ajax and a rumored chatbot, Apple GPT.

The company plans to integrate AI into Siri, Messages, and Apple Music for auto-generated playlists, as well as in Xcode to aid app developers. Apple has been using AI in its products for at least a decade. The company has listed several job opportunities centered around generative AI over the past few weeks. Apple's public AI efforts have lagged competitors including Microsoft and Google, which have made multi-billion dollar investments in AI.
